GOVERNMENT will soon announce the way forward regarding schools reopening dates after a thorough assessment of the trends in the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, a Cabinet Minister has said.

In an interview on the sidelines of the Vision for Primary and Secondary Education 2030 (VOPSE) launch at Mt Meleray Primary School in Nyanga, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Ambasador Cain Mathema said: “It is the responsibility of different Government departments to come up with a decision on when schools should reopen. It is not solely the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education that decides on that. Therefore, a Cabinet decision will soon be announced officially.”

Minister Mathema said there are some areas that are ready to open schools and others are not.

“As we speak we have areas where schools are ready to open while others are not. Chancellor Junior School in Mutare urban, for example, the school head says they are ready to open anytime even today but I was in Bulawayo yesterday where the provincial education director indicated to me that the situation is not yet conducive to reopen schools.

“Therefore, it is a complex scenario that needs a holistic approach at central Government level,” said Minister Mathema.

Schools reopening was delayed by two weeks a fortnight ago in order to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
