Six police officers based at Chitungwiza Police Station allegedly took turns to assault a director at Oxford International College, David Musindo (42), after apprehending him for urinating on an open space.
The six, whose ranks were not indicated are Jacob Tsatse (26), Florence Chimuchenga (29), Admire Zengenene (29), Herry Dowa (43), Euzzel Murombedzi (40) and Patricia Munyangadzi (46).
They were not asked to plead to assault charges when they appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mrs Renika Dzikiti.
Mrs Dzikiti remanded them out of custody on free bail to August 13.
The prosecutor, Mrs Ntombikayise Nleya, alleged that on June 20 this year at around 9pm, Musindo of 10 Kempton Road, Cranborne in Harare went to Chitungwiza.
On his way back to Harare, he approached Chikwanha Shopping Centre where he parked his vehicle off the road to relieve himself.
Musindo reportedly disembarked and started urinating on the open space.
The police officers reportedly arrived on the scene when Zengenene spotted Musindo committing the offence.
Zengenene allegedly disembarked from their vehicle, approached Musindo and told him that he was under arrest for public urinating.
Further allegations are that Zengenene tried to handcuff Musindo, but he resisted.
Zengenene allegedly called for help from his workmates and they came armed with batons.
The officers allegedly took turns to assault Musindo who fell down and they forcibly handcuffed him, after which they took him to the station.
During the assault, Musindo suffered serious injuries and could hardly stand on his own.
The following day he was fined $20 for assaulting a police officer before being released.
After getting his freedom, Musindo reported the matter leading to the six’s arrest.
