A TOTAL of $62, 9 million has been used in supporting the rehabilitation of water and sanitation infrastructure in six cities in the country under the Zim-Fund initiative, a senior Government official has said.
During a tour of some of the projects in Mutare, the permanent secretary for Finance and Economic Development, Mr Willard Manungo said the urgent upgrading of water and sewerage infrastructure in local authorities was aimed at preventing severe cholera outbreaks like the epidemic experienced in 2008.
He said the country’s development partners had, as at December 31, 2014, committed a total of $148 million through the African Development Bank for disbursement to support developmental projects in the country.
“Phase 1 of the Zim-Fund water and sanitation project is being implemented at a cost of $43, 6 million to support urgent rehabilitation works in the restoration and stabilization of water supply and sanitation services in the six municipalities of Harare, Chitungwiza, Mutare, Masvingo, Chegutu and Kwekwe. The project targets to benefit a total population of 4, 15 million people,” he said.
Vice President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to officially commission some of the finished projects in Mutare next Thursday.
