A TOTAL of 67 000 families are set to receive food aid after the World Food Program (WFP) in partnership with World Vision sourced funds to distribute food to affected families in Chipinge District. The district task force has since visited various wards identifying the most vulnerable groups which are set to benefit from the program. Wards that are going to receive food aid are 1,3,4,16,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29 and 30.
Speaking at a District Drought Relief Committee (DDRC) meeting held last Friday WFP program manager Mr Weldone Mushora said Chipinge was one of hardest hit areas in the country.
He said WFP would soon engage the local government to identify the most affected people in the chosen 15 wards.
“We have identified Chipinge as one of the district in dire need of food assistance. WFP is going to assist 67 036 households with effect from February. The assortment of food items to be distributed includes 50kg of cereals per household and $6 cash for vegetable oil which is given per each beneficiary. However not all beneficiaries will receive food for free but there are some who will be engaged in food for work.
“We will develop community projects and then give them back to the community,” he said.
An official from the Chipinge District Administrator’s office Mr Freeman Mavhiza said the district task force would visit the villages to ensure that the right people are assisted.
“Our civil protection committee agreed that the program will no accommodate those benefiting from functional irrigation schemes. We have also identified vulnerable families who are benefiting from the Social Welfare to be included in this relief programme,” he said.
