THE Salvation Army Church Manicaland District last weekend kick started their awareness campaign in preparation of a historical Territorial event to mark 125 years of the church’s existence in Zimbabwe since 1891. Hundreds of The Salvation Army soldiers of Mutare city section converged in Mutare’s Central Business District to witness the entry and the handing over of the church flag from a high powered delegation that was travelling from Harare East for the handing over ceremony.
The territorial event to mark 125 years of the church’s existence will see all ‘soldiers’ from all divisions of the country converging at Glamis Arena in Harare from September 29 to October 2 celebrating the positive works that has been done by the church over the years.
The church has been actively involved and devoted to evangelism and community responsibility initiatives, particularly assisting the poor and less privileged.
The 125th celebration flag symbolising victory was handed over to the district officer, Captain Simon Bernard Chigiya and district director of Women’s Ministries, Captain Prisca Chigiya by Harare eastern divisional commanders, Majors Reuben and Choice Muchaurawa.
Members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police escorted a cavalcade of cars from the service station in Fairbridge Park to the church’s oldest corps, Mutare Temple.
The temple, situated in the sprawling suburb of Sakubva was established in 1958.
The booming sound of brass instruments reverberated in the city and briefly brought business to a standstill. The brass band played celebratory songs as banners were raised, flags and souvenirs waved in jubilation as a form of awareness to the citizens of Mutare.
The vehicle procession attracted attention to all and sundry as more than five hundred church members made a triumphant entry into the main streets of Mutare in style.
Celebrated gospel supremo, Mechanic Manyeruke, performed live and belted out his yester-year hits as well as the church’s theme song, Jehova samba redu. He was joined by urban groove music pioneer Balt Mudepa of the Balt and Belt fame and rhumba gospel musician Lucky Mabhande.
In an interview, one of the march co-ordinators said the campaign was aimed at spreading the good news of an impending historic event in the country.
The celebratory flag will be handed over to Masvingo Division on February 28 by a delegation that will be led by the District officers from Manicaland District.
