AT least 75 money-changers were last week arrested in Chitungwiza, as police intensify operations to restore sanity in the town.
The blitz also netted 23 illegal vendors and 18 others for touting in the town. The operation is part of the efforts to restore sanity in Harare and Chitungwiza.
Police have since recorded 126 cases of obstructing free movement of traffic and people in the town, and 26 others for dangerous parking.
Acting police spokesperson for Harare province, Assistant Inspector Webster Dzvova, said the operation will continue until order is restored on the streets.
“As Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Harare province, we will continue arresting offenders to curb lawlessness and bring sanity in the city,” he said.
“The operation has spread to Chitungwiza where we arrested 75 money changers, 23 illegal vendors and 18 touts. On the same day, police who were operating in Harare CBD arrested 35 for touting, 26 for dangerous parking, and many others for various offences which include obstruction and illegal vending.
“The operation is still ongoing and we will stop when the two urban communities are clean,” he said.
Asst Insp Dzvova said police in Harare and Chitungwiza were ready to deal with criminal elements who tried to cause problems during the festive season.
“As the festive season draws nearer, ZRP Harare Province is concerned with the security and safety of residents as this is the period we witness many criminal activities,” he said.
“Police in Harare Province will be out in full force and we want to fore-warn would-be offenders that they will be arrested and prosecuted in terms of the law.
“We have noticed that robbers are now targeting money changers, residential areas and pirate taxis pick-up points. We advise the public not to walk alone during the night, not to carry large sums of cash and to avoid boarding unregistered vehicles.”
Asst Insp Dzvova urged the public to report any criminal activities to the police.
