She has caused the nation to smile through her startling exploits on the big stage as well as on the big screen and in a recent interview with Zimpapers Television Network, Danai Gurira reveals how she felt playing the role of General Okoye leader of Wakanda’s special forces, Dora Milaje in the award-wining movie, “Black Panther”.

“Playing the role of General Okoye was amazing,” said Gurira.

“What I liked the most was being able to tell the story from an African woman’s perspective who is a military general. It is something that I had never dreamt of doing but I really enjoyed doing it when the opportunity arose,” she shared.

She adds that celebrating Africanism on such a huge platform is a memory that will always be embedded in her.

“Being able to be on a platform like Marvel and telling an African story, speaking in Xhosa in the movie is a big deal to me. Celebrating Africa on that platform is the most exciting thing about the movie,” revealed the general.

The actress who also made headlines world over after landing the role of playing Tupac Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur, in the biopic “All Eyez On Me” about the late rapper’s life in 2017 had some nuggets of wisdom to share with fellow artistes.

“There is no way you can avoid hard work. Another aspect that you should consider is to create content that can stand the test of time. That can only be done when one fully applies themselves.

“Do it from the heart and be patient. It takes time, just like Rome and the Great Zimbabwe were not built in a day. What should motivate you is not the opportunity for you to shine but the ability to tell a good story,” she highlighted.

Gurira is also known for her starring roles as Michonne on the AMC horror drama series “The Walking Dead”. She is set to feature on the highly anticipated 2019 production “Avengers: Endgame”.
