A woman who refused to be limited by gender

A 26-YEAR-OLD quality controller, who works in the heavy industries’ production line, reckons women are capable of matching their male counterparts in every task.

Precious Chakaamba said she grabbed an opportunity, which  presented itself.

“I would not say I got to work in the heavy industry because I wanted to but it was inevitable due to the career that I chose.

“I have passion for food science and technology and job opportunities are available in the heavy industry so, because of my passion, I found working in the heavy industry something I liked.

“A normal working environment is a balanced one where the gender ratio is almost equal.

“Surrounded by so many men  can be intimidating, men naturally have big egos and sometimes resist instructions from female  superiors.

“As a young woman, I faced challenges in executing my supervisory role.

“Respecting each other, and avoiding confrontations, has aided in cultivating a friendly working environment with men.”

She urged other young women to commit to excellence and break the perception of male dominance.

“To my female counterparts out there, my advice is that we are equal beings and what men can do, a woman can do.

“Gone are the days when females used to be sidelined and belittled, we can occupy those influential positions as long as we are determined and have passion for what we do,” said Precious.
