ACTING Chief Wasi Nomhle Ngwenya has died, Mangwe District Development Coordinator Ms Matilda Mlotshwa has confirmed.

Ms Mlotshwa said the 65-year-old acting chief died at Plumtree District Hospital yesterday after a long illness.

“It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing on of Acting Chief Wasi, Nomhle Ngwenya, who passed away yesterday (Tuesday), 11 August 2026, at Plumtree District Hospital after a long illness. She was 65 years old,” she said in a statement.

Ms Mlotshwa said the late acting chief was appointed to the position on 23 November 2022 following the death of substantive Chief Wasi, Ashel Wasi Ndiweni, on 4 November 2021.

Ms Mlotshwa said the family had gathered at the late acting chief’s residence at 1001 Mathendele in Plumtree.

She said the family was expected to proceed to her rural home, with further details regarding the funeral arrangements to be announced in due course.

According to a source, a substantive chief has since been appointed, although the official installation ceremony is yet to be held.

The Wasi chieftainship covers areas including Zimnyama, Macingwane and part of Empandeni.
