AFRICA DAY SLAP TURNS DEADLY! Man confronts alleged phone thief… ends up dead next day

A SIMPLE beer outing turned into a fatal confrontation when a Pumula East man collapsed and died a day after being slapped during an altercation over a stolen cellphone.

Witness Moyo (40) met his tragic end after accusing Luke Mudenda of stealing his phone in April. The two crossed paths on Saturday, 25 May, at the Pumula East shopping centre, where Witness had been drinking with a friend.
“He confronted the accused, demanding his cellphone,” said Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele. “The accused hit him with an open hand on the face. The now deceased fell and hit his head on the ground.”

Though Moyo regained consciousness briefly and was helped home, his condition worsened overnight. On Sunday morning, his friend found him in bed, barely alive and unable to eat. By 11:30AM, Witness was unresponsive.
“I tried to wake him again, but he wasn’t moving,” said the devastated friend. A police report was made, and Moyo was confirmed dead.

His body has since been taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem.

Police have urged the public to avoid resolving disputes through violence. “This could have been avoided,” said Msebele. “Alcohol and aggression are a deadly mix.”
