AFTER a four-month absence, the all-women’s Doek & Slay party returns to Harare on Sunday with organisers saying the event has grown beyond its signature headwrap showcase.
They say their show was now responding to a deeper shift where women are increasingly seeking safe judgment-free spaces where they can express themselves openly.
After moving from different cities in the past few months, the show rolls back into the capital, which is its ceremonial home, for the first time since the Mega Doek & Slay party was held at the Glamis Arena in December.
It is believed to have attracted more than 25,000 people who danced in the pouring rain.
The Harare edition will be headlined by Winky D who will entertain the crowd together with the Travellers Band, Oriyano and Killer T.
“The biggest change we’ve seen is audiences wanting safe spaces where women can express themselves openly and without judgment,” said the organisers.
“Because of that, we now prioritise empowerment and community, designing experiences that weave together fashion, art, and self-expression.
“In more conservative cities, women usually start off reserved but become very lively once they’re comfortable.
“In more liberal cities, they bring that energy right away.
“These observations help us shape our Harare edition to fit local preferences while still bringing in fresh experiences.”
The organisers added:
“Doek & Slay makes a lasting impact by building women’s confidence, creativity, and connections.
“We’re growing that legacy through partnerships with local businesses and artists, creating platforms for women to showcase their talent and network, and highlighting women’s achievements.”
The show will then move to Bulawayo and, on May 3, the City of Kings will host Nkosazana Daughter and the Travellers Band.
This is the only show with a performer from outside the country.
The show, which is organised by Event Hulks, has become far more than just a social gathering.
It has opened a safe, vibrant space for women of all ages and backgrounds to relax, express themselves, and connect.
