The world is standing at the dawn of a new technological revolution.
Just as the Industrial Revolution transformed manufacturing and the internet revolution reshaped communication and commerce, artificial intelligence (AI) is redefining how nations govern, educate, produce, innovate and compete.
Countries that embrace this transformation stand to reap enormous economic and social benefits, while those that hesitate risk falling behind. Artificial intelligence is here to stay, whether we like it or not, whether we embrace it or not. In the next 10 years alone, it is predicted that artificial intelligence is going to cause disruptive changes at an enormous scale never seen by any human being.
For Zimbabwe, artificial intelligence should not be viewed as a futuristic concept reserved for developed nations. Rather, it should be recognised as a practical tool capable of accelerating the country’s journey towards becoming an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.
AI presents an opportunity to improve productivity, modernise institutions and unlock new possibilities across virtually every sector of the economy. To avoid being left behind, Zimbabwe needs to accelerate the rate at which the country is adopting AI in every sector.
Predominantly using AI tools, such as ChatGPT, developed by other countries, although not bad, should not be the focus. Instead, there is a need to shift attention and understand how artificial intelligence actually works with a view to developing our own locally-based AI tools, and ultimately, export such abroad.
Zimbabwe has long demonstrated resilience and ingenuity in the face of challenges. Those same qualities can now be harnessed to embrace AI as an engine of growth. With a youthful population, expanding internet access and increasing digital literacy, the country possesses many of the ingredients needed to participate meaningfully in the global AI revolution.
One of the greatest opportunities lies in modernising government operations. Around the world, governments are using AI to provide faster and more efficient public services. Citizens can access information through intelligent digital assistants, apply for licences online, process documents quickly and receive government services without unnecessary delays.
A government department like the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID), responsible for issuing driver’s licences, can use artificial intelligence to automate and improve every stage of the licensing process, resulting in faster, more accurate and transparent service delivery.
AI can verify applicants’ identity by matching facial images with national identity records, automatically check whether all required documents have been submitted, schedule appointments based on demand, and use chatbots to answer enquiries around the clock.
During learner’s licence and driving tests, AI can assist in monitoring examinations, detect cheating or irregularities, analyse driving performance using cameras and sensors to provide objective assessments, and instantly generate test reports.
AI can also identify suspicious applications, reduce fraud and corruption through anomaly detection, predict demand to ensure sufficient staff and testing materials are available, and analyse licensing data to help management make better policy and operational decisions. The result is shorter waiting times, improved accuracy, enhanced public confidence, greater accountability, and higher-quality service delivery.
For Zimbabwe, AI could significantly improve service delivery by reducing paperwork, minimising queues and streamlining administrative processes. Ministries and local authorities could use AI-powered systems to analyse data, improve planning and allocate resources more effectively. This would enable the Government to respond quickly to citizens’ needs while improving transparency and accountability.
Artificial intelligence also offers tremendous potential in the fight against corruption. AI systems can detect unusual financial transactions, identify procurement irregularities and flag suspicious activities that might otherwise go unnoticed. By strengthening oversight mechanisms, technology can support institutions responsible for safeguarding public resources. There are a lot of loopholes that are being exploited by criminals in various government departments, which are always being reported in various Auditor-General reports. These loopholes can be plugged easily and effectively by adopting AI.
The private sector also stands to benefit immensely. Businesses across Zimbabwe, from small enterprises to large corporations, can use AI to improve customer service, automate routine tasks, forecast market trends and optimise inventory management.
Rather than replacing people, AI enables employees to focus on higher-value work that requires creativity, strategic thinking and human interaction. There is a growing fear that AI is going to replace humans in most, if not all, fields. However, AI gives a great advantage to companies that would quickly adopt it, resulting in more business and increased growth.
As each and every company grows, more people would be required to do the work. Even though AI is going to replace people’s jobs in most companies, it is also going to create more jobs in the process.
Those who adopt AI would be able to find such jobs quickly.
Manufacturing companies can use AI to predict equipment failures before they occur, reducing costly downtime. Retail businesses can better understand consumer preferences and manage stock more efficiently.
Banks can strengthen fraud detection while improving customer experiences through intelligent digital platforms. Telecommunications companies can enhance network performance, while logistics firms can optimise delivery routes to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
Agriculture, the backbone of Zimbabwe’s economy, is another sector where AI could make a profound difference. Farmers can use AI-powered technologies to monitor soil conditions, predict weather patterns, detect crop diseases early and determine the most effective planting and harvesting times.
Such innovations can increase yields, reduce losses and strengthen food security. Already, the use of drones on farms is a highly revolutionary practice in modern agriculture. Combining it with different AI tools is a game changer, which will greatly impact the contributions of agriculture to our country’s gross domestic product.
Livestock farmers can also benefit from AI systems that monitor animal health, track movement and identify diseases before they spread. These technologies contribute to higher productivity and improved incomes for farming communities. Through the use of AI, farmers will be more knowledgeable and informed about their animal husbandry.
Healthcare represents another promising area. AI can assist doctors in diagnosing diseases quickly, analysing medical images with greater accuracy and supporting treatment decisions. Rural clinics can benefit from intelligent diagnostic tools that extend access to quality healthcare even in areas with limited specialist expertise.
The education sector must also position itself to benefit from this technological transformation. Schools, colleges and universities should begin integrating AI into teaching and learning, preparing learners for careers that will increasingly require digital and analytical skills.
AI-powered educational platforms can personalise learning by adapting lessons to each learner’s pace and abilities. Teachers can use AI to prepare lessons, assess learner performance and identify those who require additional support. Universities can employ AI to strengthen research, analyse complex datasets and foster innovation.
Beyond the classroom, educational institutions should encourage learners to develop practical skills in programming, robotics, data science and machine learning. These are among the professions likely to shape the global economy in the coming decades. Zimbabwean graduates equipped with such competencies will be well positioned to compete internationally while contributing to national development.
Communities can equally benefit from AI. Local authorities can use intelligent systems to improve waste collection, monitor water supplies, manage traffic flow and enhance citizens’ safety. AI can assist disaster preparedness by analysing weather patterns and issuing early warnings for floods or droughts, helping communities respond more effectively.
Small-scale entrepreneurs and informal traders should not be left behind. AI-powered tools can help them manage finances, market products online, translate business information into multiple languages and reach customers beyond their immediate locations. This democratisation of technology ensures that innovation benefits not only large corporations but also ordinary citizens striving to improve their livelihoods.
Importantly, embracing AI requires investment in digital infrastructure. Reliable electricity, affordable internet connectivity and expanded broadband coverage remain fundamental requirements. Continued improvements in these areas will create an enabling environment for technological innovation and digital entrepreneurship.
Human capital development is equally essential. The Government, universities, technical colleges and the private sector should work together to provide AI training programmes that equip young people with the skills required for tomorrow’s economy. Digital literacy should become a national priority, ensuring that citizens from all backgrounds can participate in the opportunities presented by AI.
At the same time, Zimbabwe must embrace AI responsibly. The development of appropriate policies and regulatory frameworks will help ensure that AI is used ethically, protects personal privacy and serves the public interest. Technology should always complement human judgment rather than replace it in areas requiring empathy, accountability and moral responsibility.
Encouraging local innovation will also be critical. Zimbabwe’s young software developers, engineers, researchers and entrepreneurs possess immense talent. By supporting innovation hubs, technology parks, research institutions and startup ecosystems, the country can nurture home-grown AI solutions designed specifically for Zimbabwe’s unique challenges and opportunities.
Artificial intelligence should not be perceived as a threat to employment but as a catalyst for creating new industries and expanding economic opportunities.
History has shown that technological revolutions often eliminate certain jobs while creating entirely new professions. The key is preparing the workforce to adapt and acquire new skills.
The countries that prosper in the coming decades will be those that embrace innovation with confidence. Zimbabwe has an opportunity to become one of Africa’s emerging digital economies by investing in technology, education, entrepreneurship and infrastructure.
Such an approach aligns with the broader aspirations of building a modern, industrialised and knowledge-driven economy. The future belongs to nations willing to innovate. Artificial intelligence offers Zimbabwe an unprecedented opportunity to modernise public administration, transform businesses, improve healthcare, strengthen education, increase agricultural productivity and enhance the quality of life for its citizens.
The challenge before us is not whether AI will shape the future—it undoubtedly will. The real question is whether Zimbabwe will seize this moment to become a creator of technological solutions rather than merely a consumer of innovations developed elsewhere.
With vision, investment and collaboration, Artificial intelligence can become one of the most powerful tools in Zimbabwe’s continued journey towards sustainable development, prosperity and national transformation.
