Air Tanzania is set to launch a new route from Victoria Falls to Dar es Salaam and Cape Town this Thursday.
The new route is expected to increase tourism activities and significantly boost air connectivity.
This aligns with Zimbabwe’s “Open Skies Policy”, which continues to attract more airlines to the country.
The Government is accelerating the momentum through enhancing aviation infrastructure modernisation in line with global standards.
Open skies means that any foreign airline can make arrangements to open routes into Zimbabwe or increase the frequency of their flights into the country.
The development comes after the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has invested in equipment for the Air Space Management System, completed the RGMI Airport VVIP Pavilion, signed memoranda of understanding to attract more airlines, bringing the number currently flying into Zimbabwe to 23.
In a communique, the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) confirmed that Air Tanzania will be launching the new route.
“Airports Company of Zimbabwe Private Limited welcomes Air Tanzania Company Limited, ‘The Wings of Kilimanjaro’, as they launch their new route connecting Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam to our majestic Victoria Falls on December 11, 2025,” reads the communique.
“This triangular service, which continues to Cape Town, significantly boosts Zimbabwe’s growing air connectivity, reinforcing Victoria Falls International Airport’s status as a prime regional tourism hub and enhancing our ability to facilitate seamless multi-destination travel for both leisure and business visitors across Southern and East Africa.”
Speaking to local media last week, the airline’s Zimbabwe country manager, Ismail Mpinga, also confirmed the development.
“Air Tanzania is planning to commence our scheduled flight from Dar es Salaam to Victoria Falls on December 11 and the route is going to be operating two times a week (Thursdays and Sundays),” he said.
“We decided to go to Vic Falls and Cape Town as they are tourist destinations. We look at these two destinations as brothers and sisters, so we will link them in terms of marketing with the tourism board.”
Developing an efficient air transport system is critical to enhancing economic growth in line with the country’s aspirations as expressed under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).
The Government is upgrading airport infrastructure countrywide in an effort to meet international standards and attract more airlines.
This has seen the country attracting international airlines such as Qatar Airways, Eurowings Discover, Emirates, Ethiopian Airways, South African Airways, Kenyan Airways, South Africa’s Airlink and Fastjet among others.
