HIGH-RIDING handball club Ajax have started to intensify their preparations for this year’s season, having romped in three new players.

The youthful players, who are learners at Mpopoma High School are Antony Ncube, Learmore, Sibusiso Rubunya and Nyasha Tibigu.

Club chairman Collen Nkomo told Zimpapers Sports Hub yesterday that they have assembled a formidable side that has set sights on winning all competitions.

“We are preparing and playing well. The team has so far participated in the TG Tournament held in Harare on April 6 to 7, alongside Harare teams such as Harare Polytechnic, Manyame Air Base, All Tribes, Black Rhinos, University, Tigers and many others.

“We came third as we had sent just 11 players for many games due to financial constraints,” Nkomo.

Ajax have also participated in friendly matches. Last week they took part at the Southern Region Open League where there are six men’s teams.

Ajax won the tournament.

Nkomo said the friendlies did well in measuring their strength.

“All these games were preparatory matches the upcoming games.

“On 4 May there will be the Bulawayo Provincial Open Season Tournament were all Byo teams will participate. The tertiary institutions tournament will be on 25 May at United College of Education.”

Ajax has yet to find adequate funding, with Nkomo saying they were still sending an SOS to all businesses.

“In terms of sponsorship, we haven’t found any to date, including equipment. We are still appealing for sponsorship for us to participate in the World Cup Championships to be hosted in Cape Town South Africa again this coming August,” he said.

The Bulawayo-based club team was named as the best team in the African Union Sports Council Region 5, Zone VI rankings in 2023.
