LEGENDARY boxer, Alphonso “Mosquito” Zvenyika is preparing to launch a boxing academy in Mutare.

The former flyweight and bantamweight champion, said he wants to groom boxers from the Eastern Region as part of a nationwide movement to promote Zimbabwean talent on the global stage.

Speaking to Post Sport, Zvenyika said: “The reason behind the opening of a new academy is to bolster support for youths to refrain from using drugs and nurture their untapped potential so that they can climb to the top of the world rankings.”

Zvenyika dominated the boxing scene with victories in the flyweight and bantamweight division that saw him clinching the Commonwealth title twice and the Zone Six African Flyweight title.

Mosquito, the name that Zvenyika was popularly referred to during his hay-days was a testimony of his swinging prowess as he was a nightmare to opponents with a record of 17 wins with 10 knockouts, two draws and 12 losses in a career that spanned two decades.

The fighter-cum-promoter added: “At the end of the day, I want to take youths off the streets and elevate their lives through boxing. I am calling on all prospective sponsors to join in this venture so that we could revive the dying sport.

“Sponsorship has been the main challenge and modalities are already in place. We have engaged several partners who have pledged to come on board, but we will surely set the ball rolling when everything is in place and that should be in the near future.”
