Since its launch last year, Upper Lounge, formerly Liquid Lounge, has carved a niche market for itself, when it drew huge crowds from not just the northern suburbss but also the western suburbs with a taste for good music.
With the youthful hosts – DJ Flevah and Dee Vine – every Friday, the hangout was last weekend the nerve of the city with all roads leading to Rhodesville Shops for what became the biggest gathering of music lovers.
This Saturday the joint will see the return of two of Harare’s finest disc jockeys – The Dude and Jay Bone, of the Movip family who have a huge following in the ABC of Harare, oops, we are talking about Arcadia, Braeside and Cranborne.
According to Kevin Nyakotyo of Upper Lounge, the two DJs have turned the Saturday night into must attend dance sessions with their thumping house music.
“We have a diverse lineup at Upper Lounge and everyday has its own concept and theme. We also noted that pole dancing has come to most of Harare’s clubs and that it has its own crowd and the gigs on Saturdays
are for those who want to dance. Friday nights are also picking up and we hope to have full houses in the near future,” he said.
Nyakotyo said ever since they introduced pole dancing at the club there has been an increase in the number of patrons at the hangout.
Of late, pole dancing has come to many of Harare’s hangouts and clubs where patrons turn up in large numbers to watch young women dressed skimpily and revealing clothing dance on poles.
This new dancing craze has pushed the dance groups that used to be popular at these joints into the background; no one knows if this is a passing craze or something a little more permanent.
Pole dancers in Harare technically do not strip, although some costumes leave very little to the imagination. As with all forms of dancing, a great deal depends when considering whether it is an art form, on the
clothing worn or not worn, remembering that all dancing has at least some erotic element.
