THERE is no better leader than a leader who walks the talk and leads by example, which is what was exemplified by the First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe and Vice-President Joice Mujuru who graduated with doctorate degrees at the University of Zimbabwe last Friday.
Amai Mugabe graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in the Faculty of Social Studies, while Cde Mujuru graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the Faculty of Commerce.
The two were part of the 3 274 graduates who were capped by President Mugabe, who is the Chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe.
While their life stories bring out nothing but glaring tales of bold women from humble beginnings determined to make a mark in the world, last week Friday added more accolades to their life achievements.
From being a secretary to First Lady in 1996 when she tied the knot with His Excellency President Mugabe and now Dr Grace Mugabe’s life is a fairytale that every woman would aspire to live.
Amai Mugabe’s first degree was in Chinese Language at the People’s University of China and she is now on the verge of becoming Zanu-PF Women’s League Secretary following her earth-shattering nomination countrywide.
On the other hand, Cde Mujuru fought in the liberation war and immediately after independence shifted her attention on emancipating and empowering herself in the new world through further education.
Cde Mujuru attained her degree in Strategic Management from the Women’s University of Africa and a Masters’ degree in Entrepreneurial Development from Chinhoyi University.
Not leaving out her greatest achievement, she became the first female VP in Zimbabwe in 2004.
The title of Cde Mujuru’s thesis was: “A Strategic Explanatory Entrepreneurship Study of Sustainable Agricultural Business: Case Studies of Mitchel and Mitchel in Mashonaland East and Dotito Irrigation Scheme in Mashonaland Central Province,” while the title of Amai Mugabe’s thesis was: “The Changing Social Structure of the Family: The Case of Children’s Homes in Zimbabwe”.
The two esteemed and powerful women in Zimbabwe’s political circles have demonstrated what women empowerment is through education and that it is never too late to turn a dream into reality, regardless of any background.
With the ongoing 50/50 women empowerment drive in motion, Amai Mugabe and Cde Mujuru have no doubt walked the talk in the academic empowerment drive for women.
