Ambulance driver kills woman

AN ambulance driver based at St Peter’s Mission Hospital in Chisumbanje was on Tuesday fined $300 for running over a local woman.Oscar Hliziyo (41) of Munepasi Village under Chief Garahwa’s area pleaded guilty when he appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Vuso Gapara facing culpable homicide charges as defined in Section 49 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

Prosecuting, Mr Regis Mawarire, said on October 7at around 1pm, Hliziyo was driving an ambulance, a Toyota  Landcruiser vehicle along Ngundu –Tanganda Road with two patients on board when he hit the woman.

“He was leading towards Chipinge town with two patients on board. On approaching the 234km peg, Hliziyo saw Talent Kuseni who was walking on the left side of the road going to the same direction with him. The accused person did not sound his horn or reduce his speed.

“Hliziyo then hit Kuseni with the left side of the bumper of his vehicle. Kuseni fell down and Hliziyo did not stop his ambulance. Kuseni died on spot,” he said.

Mr Mawarire said on the same day at around 4pm, Hliziyo came back from Chipinge District Hospital and stopped at the accident scene. He saw Kuseni’s body on the road side.

“Hliziyo did not disembark from his vehicle or guard the corpse, but drove off from the scene. He did not report the matter to the police. Kuseni’s body was later conveyed to Chipinge District Hospital where Dr Davison Taremba confirmed the cause of death as multiple body injuries,” said Mr Mawarire.

Hliziyo was slapped with 24 months imprisonment, wholly suspended on condition of paying a fine of $300.
