One of the most pressing questions for the Warriors is whether the K V Mechelen player brimming with potential, will be available to help lift the team’s hopes in the campaign.

Antonio, who has had a remarkable rise in Zimbabwean football, recently made his return to the pitch after a long-term knee injury that kept him sidelined for months.

With key matches against Benin and Nigeria just around the corner, all eyes are on the 22-year-old winger. Can he make a significant impact in Zimbabwe’s qualification bid, and is head coach Nees confident that Antonio is ready for the challenge?

Bill Antonio’s rise in football has been nothing short of remarkable. Born and raised in Dzivarasekwa in Harare, Antonio’s journey began at a young age when he started playing first-team football in Grade Five at Gillingham Primary.

His talent quickly caught the attention of coaches, and by Grade Six, he was part of Dzivarasekwa Football Academy before moving to Prince Edward, where he became a key figure on their senior team.

His leadership abilities were evident, with Antonio captaining the Under-14 side and later, the senior team at Prince Edward. He also earned recognition as the captain of the school’s athletics team.

These early experiences laid the foundation for a career that would soon see him rise through the ranks of Zimbabwean football.

Antonio’s potential didn’t go unnoticed, and after shining for Prince Edward, he was recruited by Dynamos Football Club, one of Zimbabwe’s biggest teams. His performances there earned him a spot in the Zimbabwean national squad in 2021 for World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Ethiopia.

But it was his move abroad that marked a new chapter in his career. After impressing during a trial, Antonio signed with Belgian club KV Mechelen in September 2022.

However, just as things were looking up, disaster struck. In March 2023, Antonio ruptured his ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament)during a Belgian Pro League match, sidelining him for nearly ten months. The injury was a major blow, not just to Antonio, but also to his international aspirations. Yet, the young winger’s determination to recover saw him return to action.

In November 2023, Antonio made his long-awaited debut in the Belgian Pro League during a 1-1 draw against Standard Liege, albeit as a late substitute. Although he played for just 14 minutes, the match represented the first of many steps in his recovery and potential return to top form. With the Warriors now preparing for their upcoming qualifiers against Benin and Nigeria, Antonio’s availability is a key consideration. Given the timing of the fixtures and Antonio’s recent return to action, it remains uncertain whether he will be fit enough to make a meaningful impact if selected.

At present, Zimbabwe sits at the bottom of Group C in the World Cup qualifiers, with only two points from four matches.

Their hopes of qualification are slim, making these upcoming matches against Benin and Nigeria critical.
