Popular local names in the fashion industry have collaborated in a project that is aimed at developing the industry. The list includes stylists, models, musicians, make-up artist and designers that will have periodic photo-shoots to try and match international standards. The names are Davina Dzambo, Tsungi, Tinashe Njangu, Marshal Malikula, Kudzai Chakaingesu, Varaidzo Nyakunika, Pamela and Fisher Masango.
In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, Chakaingesu the spokesperson of the photo-shoot said the main reason for the shoot was to defy the odds and produce art that could compete on an international level.
“We have been lacking such initiatives because fashion is one of the most vibrant and exhilarating areas of professional photography.
“Though only a few top photographers live up to the glamorous image of overseas travel, exotic locations and beautiful models, there is continuous demand across the industry for originality and innovation,” he said.
Chakaingesu, a model-cum-photographer said people should understand and appreciate fashion photography as that is the root for fashion.
“Those who understand fashion trends and can deliver striking images that sell the look and style of the clothes are in demand internationally and can get considerable income.
“We wanted to prove the world that you don’t need a million dollar budget to produce a high quality art,” he explained.
He said this will also push some Zimbabwean artists to leave their sub-standard way of doing things and come out of their comfort zone.
“If you look closely many stylist and make-up artists sometimes have a headache of what they want or like the picture to come out like.
“The models usually fail to make the needed impressions. We should move with time and follow current trends,” he said.
He added that people in the fashion industry should take it seriously as it can sustain livelihoods.
“Some of the top international designers and fashion icons have made a name though hard work, courage and determination. Fashion is an art and it can bring food on the table.
“We have quite a number of people who are earning a living through it,” he said.
