Assistant Commissioner Gideon Baloyi, who has been cleared by the High Court of corruptly causing the release of a fraud suspect, is back at work. Asst Comm Baloyi resumed his duties on Monday. In an interview yesterday, Asst Comm Baloyi, who was last year jailed nine months, confirmed the development. “I am looking forward to a wonderful working relationship with all the officers, rank and file of the ZRP,” he said.
The Herald understands that Asst Comm Baloyi was on Monday handed back his official vehicle, a Nissan Navara.
“With the efficiency of the organisation, it is my hope that it has already carried out its internal investigations to establish the culprits behind these frivolous allegations and subsequent conviction which resulted in my incarceration,” he said.
He said, whoever, was behind it should face the full wrath of the law.
Last month, Justice Francis Bere, sitting with Justice Charles Hungwe, found Asst Comm Baloyi not guilty of the charges of putting the police force into disrepute by corruptly instructing a junior officer to release a fraud suspect.
The decision was made after an appeal by Asst Comm Baloyi’s lawyer Mr Misheck Hogwe of Hogwe, Dzimirai and Partners.
Quashing the conviction and sentence imposed on Asst Comm Baloyi — Justice Bere said there was no credible evidence confirming that the senior officer interfered with the case.
Asst Comm Baloyi — who was a staff officer at the Police General Headquarters in Harare — was jailed by magistrate Mr Elijah Makomo for trying to protect Nevermind Kufakunesu, accused of swindling a local businessman Mr Batsirayi Mupindu of chickens worth US$21 000.
