African Union (AU) Special Envoy on Youth, Ms Chido Mpemba has arrived in the country to spearhead a Young Women Empowerment event in partnership with the African Union and the Go Getter Movement.

The high-profile gathering that will be held in the capital is aimed at fostering leadership development, knowledge exchange, and best practices among young women in Zimbabwe and the region.

The event is supported by the World Bank Group and builds on Ms Mpemba’s efforts to empower youths and grassroots organisations across the continent.

Speaking ahead of the event, Ms Mpemba said young women play a critical role in shaping Africa’s future.

“This initiative reflects my unwavering commitment to the socio-economic development of young women as future leaders,” she said.

“We, the young people, are the leaders of today. I am here to support, empower, and uplift our young women and youth-led organisations.”

The visit also highlights Ms Mpemba’s gratitude to Zimbabwean youths and the Government for their continued support during her historic tenure as the youngest member of the AU chairperson’s Cabinet.

Known for her groundbreaking work in youth, gender and women’s empowerment, Ms Mpemba has emerged as a leading voice in Pan-African advocacy.

Her efforts have included championing the institutionalisation of the Office of the Youth Envoy and promoting the adoption of the African Youth Charter across multiple nations.

Ms Trish Hakata, the founder of the Go Getter Movement, expressed excitement about the collaboration, describing it as a landmark moment for young women.

“Her support is invaluable to achieving our mission as African women,” Ms Hakata said.

“This event provides an opportunity to learn from leaders across the continent while fostering knowledge exchange, including with regions like the Sahel.”

In addition to her AU role, Ms Mpemba has taken on global advocacy positions, including her recent appointment as co-chair of the World Health Organisation’s Social Connection Commission alongside US Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy.

She also serves on UNICEF’s Global Leadership Council for Generation Unlimited, solidifying her influence on youth and gender issues globally.

With her term as AU Youth Envoy concluding early next year, Ms Mpemba leaves a lasting legacy of transformative leadership and youth empowerment.

The collaboration with the Go Getter Movement marks another pivotal step towards advancing gender equality and nurturing future leaders in Zimbabwe and beyond.
