THE desire for a quick buck backfired when a Kevarez Investments employee who had planned to permanently deprive his employer of $4 100 ended up in court facing theft charges. Clifton Jonasi (26) appeared before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura facing theft charges after he contravened Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23, by stealing 418 bags of cement worth $4 100 from his employer.
Jonasi was convicted on his own guilty plea and the matter was adjourned to today for sentencing.
Mr Donald Mudadirwa prosecuted.
The State heard that on February 20, the owner of Kevarez Investments, Faisal Melhool, who resides in Harare, came for an unannounced audit where he discovered that 418 bags of cement worth $4 100 were missing, which led to Jonasi’s arrest.
Jonasi told the court that the audit caught him unawares.
He said if he had been informed of the audit in advance, he would have found other means to restitution.
“It had been long since he last came for an audit, so I thought I would have covered up before he even came for another audit.
“Your Worship, I agree that I had no legal right to act in the manner that I did, but I was working on returning the cement.
“Besides, Your Worship, I did not steal the cement but stole cash. I just need that corrected in the record,” he said.
Mrs Chiundura warned him against his illegal means of making money.
“Find other legal means to earn money if you are not content with what your employer pays you at the end of the month.”
