IN a spine-chilling horror straight out of a village nightmare, a 28-year-old man went berserk and torched a 72-year-old granny after axing her in the head, after accusing her of bewitching him.
Police have confirmed the arrest of Sibongiseni Mfanaso Mpofu who allegedly attacked Christine Ncube with an axe before dousing her with paraffin and setting her ablaze in front of shocked villagers.
“The suspect reportedly struck the complainant on the head with an axe, poured paraffin on her and set her on fire,” said police on their X (formerly Twitter) account.
Mpofu, who hails from Lupane, is said to have believed his elderly neighbour was behind his alleged misfortunes. The gruesome attack occurred on 18 May 2025, leaving villagers traumatised.
“She sustained severe burns and was rescued by other villagers,” police added. “She was referred to St Luke’s Hospital and later transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital.”
Sources say it took the bravery of neighbours to stop the flames and get Christine help. At the time of going to print, her condition was said to be critical but stable.
The suspect is in custody and expected to face charges of attempted murder.
