DEFRAUDING his employer of more than $5 000 saw a Mutare man being dragged to court. Crispen Charuma (32) who was employed as a salesman at Bakers’ Inn appeared before Mutare senior magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura facing charges of defrauding Bakers’ Inn of $5 332. He denied the charges and said he only failed to account for $1 200. Mrs Chiundura remanded Charuma out of custody to October 27 on $200 bail.

He was ordered to report every Friday at the Criminal Investigation Department at Mutare Central Police Station. Representing the State, Mr Brian Goto, said the matter was brought to light by the company’s human resources manager, Mr Malvern Mhlanga after a debtors clerk, Jacob Mutsau discovered that $5 322 was unaccounted for on September 30.

The court heard that Charuma started working as a salesman delivering bread on January 6. His duties included receiving cash and banking it in the Bakers Inn account.

It is alleged that on several occasions, he would not hand the money over to his employer, but instead claimed that clients had bought bread on credit.
