When the season began the competition hung in the balance amid reports that the sponsors didn’t have the money to bankroll this year’s edition and were also not happy with the way they were being treated by the PSL on a number of issues.
However, it appears BancABC had finally resolved at a later stage to sponsor the tournament which was pencilled in for the period June to August before the biggest cup Mbada Diamonds begins.
Sources close to the deal say the banking entity this week finally withdrew from hosting the tournament after haggling on the dates. BancABC’s proposed first round was clashing with the Warriors match in Luanda while they also wanted their final to close the season.
“They felt they could not get any mileage from the dates which were being proposed by the league management as sponsors . And they have resolved that the money from the Sup8r will now be channelled into the clubs they sponsor that is Dynamos, Highlanders and Black Mambas.
“They will increase their package to these clubs. They were also mulling an idea to bring Caps United on board as the fourth club but they have decided to stick to the three clubs and strengthen their brand.
“Already they are happy with the clubs, Mambas are doing well and the top two in the league which are vying for the title are sponsored by them.
“They believe the salaries they are paying for the clubs have brought stability leaving the clubs to concentrate on playing football,” said the source.
BancABC are forking $200 000 per year in salaries for a club like Dynamos.
PSL chief executive Kenny Ndebele could not be drawn to comment on the developments and said he has not received anything official from the sponsors pertaining the matter.
