BAND Fusion, the acclaimed five-piece Afro soul band based in Bulawayo, has made changes to how they operate, composing their own Valentine’s Day single, “Asibuyeleni emathandweni” differing from the covers they usually do on gigs.

This romantically-charged track features Austrian-based artiste Vusa Mkhaya and marks a significant transition for the band as they step away from primarily performing covers, karaokes, and weddings to becoming established song composers.

Formed in 2017, Band Fusion has built a reputation for their dynamic live performances, showcasing a mix of their original music alongside popular tracks from local and international artistes.

Their versatility has allowed them to perform at a variety of venues across Zimbabwe, including the prestigious Munch & Sip and the Intwasa Arts Festival KoBulawayo, where they shared the stage with some of the country’s finest musicians.

In an exclusive interview with Chronicle Showbiz, Lungile “Luiji” Ndlovu, the band’s vocalist and drummer, shared insights about their evolution.

“For eight years, we have been gigging only, doing covers and karaokes, but now we think all of the years have been preparing us for such a time where we’ll be composing our own content to expand our portfolio,” Luiji explained.

“We are in transition mode, tapping into uncharted territory.”

Luiji explained in detail what “Asibuyeleni emathandweni” is all about.

“Our Valentine’s Day offering takes listeners to an era long past, where pure romantic relationships thrived on the pillars of trust, respect, and heartfelt communication, creating a drapery of emotional intimacy that many today can only dream of. This song brings to remembrance a time where couples would often express their affection through handwritten letters, stolen glances, and shared dreams under starlit skies, cultivating a profound connection unmarred by the insecurities of modern digital distractions.

“The absence of cheating and emotional blackmail allowed love to flourish authentically, where partners uplifted each other, celebrated their individuality, and faced life’s challenges as a united front. This bygone era reminds us that true romance is not merely about passion, but about building a foundation of mutual support and unwavering loyalty that stands the test of time,” he shared.

Band Fusion, which comprises talented members Paul “Sekoz” Maseko (bass guitar), Mthabisi “GL” Moyo (lead guitar, vocals), Joseph “Satiff” Banda (keyboards), and Luke “Delukes” Kamanga (mbira player, vocals), has also graced elite events such as the Bulawayo Jazz Festival and Vice-President Kembo Mohadi’s fundraising dinner for a cancer ward at Mpilo Central Hospital.

Their mature sound has attracted a wide range of corporate clients, including First Mutual, Delta Beverages, and Old Mutual, showcasing their professionalism as a registered and tax-compliant business entity.

Luiji said “Asibuyeleni emathandweni” will be the genesis of a series of songs set to be released periodically over the course of the year including, “Musikana Akanaka” which features rapper, Asaph Afrika and “Uthando ngumlilo.”

The song was recorded at Erastus Nleya’s “Loud Records” as well as at GL’s Bethline Studios, produced by GL.

The release of “Asibuyeleni emathandweni” is a bold step in this new direction. The song is available on YouTube and other digital platforms, offering fans a heartfelt gift this Valentine’s Day.

Collaborating with Vusa Mkhaya added a unique flavour to the track, enhancing its romantic essence.

Mkhaya expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, “It’s always fun working with artistes from Bulawayo because they possess amazing creativity.”

Luiji also said they won’t be stopping and the single releases will culminate in the release of their debut album.
