THE tragic death of FC Platinum midfielder, Brian Banda, was heavily felt at Rufaro where CAPS United and GreenFuel battled their way to a goalless draw in a Castle Lager Premier League match yesterday.
Banda was 29.
FC Platinum confirmed that the accident, which occurred along the Zvishavane-Bulawayo road, claimed his life on the spot.
Banda won the championships with FC Platinum.
He also won the Chibuku Super Cup with Highlanders. He was at the heart of their midfield when FC Platinum won their fourth championship on the spin.
Banda has several caps for the Warriors.
The news came just before the restart at Rufaro yesterday and this could have weighed down heavily on the players who might have heard that one of their own had died.
Both teams were flat after the restart and it is not surprising that a goalless draw was the result.
GreenFuel coach, Rodwell Dhlakama, who was guiding the club for the first time since his return, said he was shocked by Banda’s death.
“This is sad and it can’t be true, Banda is too young,” said Dhlakama.
“I do not know what else to say but this is not good news to everyone who knows the boy.” Dhlakama was back on the GreenFuel bench a year after he was sacked after a loss to the Green Machine.
This time his men, who conceded five goals in the first half in their derby against Triangle last weekend, were not generous and played for their badge.
CAPS United will be disappointed given that they were expected to beat the visitors and continue with their mini resurgence.
