CHINESE ENVOY HAILS ZIM ACADEMY

CHINESE Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, has hailed the phenomenal rise of Jadel Academy which he says has become a key pillar of the two countries’ sports and cultural exchange programmes.

Jadel was founded in China by former Zimbabwe youth international, Walter “Ringers” Musanhu, with only three players, about a decade ago.

And, it has grown to become one of the most recognisable grassroots projects in both Zimbabwe and China.

The academy’s Under-11 and Under-13 teams have now become permanent fixtures in global tournaments hosted by China, including the Thaiwoo Cup and the 100 Teams jamborees.

They have since been invited to participate in both fiestas running between July 6 and August 16.

During the academy’s send-off and fundraising dinner in Harare last Friday, Ding said:

“On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Walter Musanhu, the founder of JFA; all trainees and friends across sectors who have championed Zimbabwean football and China-Zimbabwe sports exchanges.

“Musanhu has crafted a touching story of China-Africa friendship through football. What began with three young trainees in Beijing has evolved into a thriving academy – now nurturing nearly 100 promising athletes across five age groups.

“This journey exemplifies the robust sports cooperation between our two nations.

“This year marks the 45th anniversary of China-Zimbabwe diplomatic ties – a milestone echoing the spirit of our sports exchanges: partnerships that bridge cultures, unite values and empower youth through athletic passion.”

Ding said China, whose top league is also home to one of Zimbabwe’s most illustrious football servant Nyasha Mushekwi, will double its support for bilateral sports programmes with this country.

“Moving forward, China will redouble support for bilateral sports collaboration through joint training programmes, youth exchange camps, and coaching seminars to nurture talent in both nations.

“Earlier today (on Friday), at the Embassy, I hosted the newly established Zimbabwe-China Friendship Association of the Zimbabwean Parliament.

“When members proposed football exchanges, noting Zimbabweans’ deep love for the sport, I affirmed that while China’s national team may lack trophies at the highest level, our people’s passion for football is unwavering. I pledged future visits by Chinese youth teams to Zimbabwe for matches and exchanges.

“Not so long ago, Ms Kirsty Coventry assumed her post as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“Her leadership highlights Zimbabwe’s global sporting influence and symbolises the rising prominence of African voices in international sports governance – a remarkable achievement for Zimbabwe and our entire continent.

“Dear young athletes, as you travel to China, you will also serve as goodwill ambassadors. Like Zimbabwean footballer Nyasha Mushekwi, whose stardom in China’s Super League transcended borders, your journey embodies sport’s power to break barriers and inspire excellence on and off the field.

“I urge you to embrace this experience beyond the pitch: explore Chinese culture, forge new friendships, and create lifelong memories.”

The dinner was put together to raise at least US$60 000 that the academy needs to meet all the costs involved.

However they managed to raise just a sixth of that amount and Musanhu said: “We are still in need of about US$50 000 for the trip.

“We are grateful to individuals and corporates who have come on board to support this cause.

“We are indebted to the support of the Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe (Ding) for his unconditional support of this project. We look forward to doing even more for China and Zimbabwe football.”
