A woman who allegedly assaulted her sister’s three-year-old daughter and sustained serious injuries, was denied bail yesterday. Vennah Moyo (35) of Makomo Extension, appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe last Friday. She is facing charges of ill treatment of a child and was advised to apply for bail at the High Court. The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on April 26 this year, around 7am, a neighbour, Simon Nzombe, advised Moyo to go with the child to a clinic after noticing the child’s swollen face and scratches.

Moyo allegedly refused to take heed. It is alleged that the following day another neighbour called Childline that pursued the matter leading to Moyo’s arrest. Moyo’s eight-year-old son testified that his mother assaulted the toddler on several occasions.

The toddle was taken to Harare Hospital where she is admitted.
