Be examplary, police told

POLICE Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri said he will not hesitate to invoke the Police Act and discharge from duty officers involved in nefarious activities. Comm-Gen Chihuri said the Police Act allowed him to set up boards and trials for any disciplinary proceedings.

He said officers should not force him to do so as he was not happy to appoint senior officers to conduct disciplinary matters.
“I am not happy to have senior officers conducting disciplinary hearings. Conducting disciplinary hearing should not take senior officers’ time as they have other important duties to attend to,” he said.

He was addressing 23 officers who returned to the country from United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in Liberia and South Sudan.
Of the 23, 18 were in Liberia for 12 months while the other five were in South Sudan for 18 months.

Comm-Gen Chihuri urged officers countrywide to discharge their duties with loyalty and to remain disciplined.  He said the officers should remember that their job was to serve the people.

“As we have always emphasised on numerous fora that as police, we are an indivisible part of the Zimbabwean society.  We are part of Zimbabwe and our work should thus be done with uttermost loyalty, commitment and patriotism,” Comm-Gen Chihuri                                 said.

Comm-Gen Chihuri urged the returning officers to acquaint themselves with the new Constitution as it would assist them in their day-to-day duties.

“As you assume your duties at your respective stations and sections, I urge you to continue along the same pattern of discipline and good conduct which you have demonstrated and mirrored both at home and the international stage,” he said.

Comm-Gen Chihuri said officers should stand on the side of good order which promotes the moral fibre of the society. He said the country was focused on the implementation of the recently unveiled socio-economic blueprint, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset).
