A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a fellow villager following a misunderstanding during a beer drinking spree in Njere Village, under Chief Garahwa, in Chipinge.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said Simbarashe Mahanya was arrested in connection with the murder of 24-year-old Joshua Sithole.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Simbarashe Mahanya (23) in connection with a case of murder which occurred at Njere Village, Chipinge on May 10, 2026,” said Comm Nyathi.
“The victim later succumbed to the injuries.
“On May 9, 2026, at around 2345 hours, Mahanya and Sithole were drinking beer at (Take More) Gwemba’s homestead in Njere Village.
“During the drinking spree, the two had a misunderstanding at around 0020 hours.
“Gwemba, who was asleep in his house, was awakened by the arguments and came out to investigate.” Gwemba found the two men insulting each other before ordering them to leave his homestead.
“He chased them away from his home and they left,” said Comm Nyathi.
“After a few minutes, Gwemba heard Sithole groaning and crying for help and rushed to the scene, which was about 30 metres away from his homestead. He found Mahanya dragging Sithole, while he was still alive, and bleeding profusely. An okapi knife was found at the scene.”
He said Mahanya allegedly fled from the scene after noticing Gwemba approaching.
Comm Nyathi said villagers and relatives were alerted and Sithole died from the injuries before he could be taken to hospital.
“Gwemba alerted villagers and relatives of Sithole. The victim later died from the injuries before being taken to hospital.”
Villagers later tracked down Mahanya and handed him over to the police.
“Villagers followed after the accused person and managed to apprehend him.
“The matter was reported at ZRP Chisumbanje,” said Comm Nyathi.
“The body was taken to St Peter’s Hospital for post-mortem while investigations are still in progress.Police are advising people to solve their misunderstandings amicably and desist from violent ways of addressing their disputes.”
