Mwaruwari started his career at Castle Lager Premiership log leaders Highlanders before moving to Air Zimbabwe Jets in the capital where he later moved to South Africa and then France before his talent took him to England.
“I am ready to retire from football if I do not manage to secure a contract with a Premier League team here [in South Africa],” said Mwaruwari in an interview with respected South African online site KickOff.com.
The Magwegwe-born Mwaruwari, nicknamed “The Undertaker”, said rumours linking him to Jomo Cosmos were not true as he was only training with them and nothing more.
“I have been training with Jomo Cosmos, but I am not going to be signing a contract with them.
“Those were just rumours. I still attend some of the training sessions at Cosmos just to keep fit, but this is as far as it goes.
“The only team I have talked with is Bidvest Wits, but the talks did not amount to anything tangible. If I do not get any offers then I will call time on my career,” added the 34-year-old forward.
Mwaruwari burst onto the scene in 1999 while playing for Air Zimbabwe Jets.
Jomo Sono spotted his talent and quickly signed him for Cosmos.
This move was a masterstroke as Benjani scored 20 goals in 44 appearances between 1999 and 2000 during a fruitful spell at the club.
He then moved to Europe where he first played for Swiss side Grasshoppers before a more lucrative move to French outfit AJ Auxerre followed.
Mwaruwari’s goal-scoring form resulted in him being sold to English Premiership side Portsmouth in 2006.
