Fixture congestion dogs PSL

The PSL had set that date as the final weekend of the 2012 season following the League Cup final.
With time ticking and with the league left with 14 weekends, a fixture congestion looks on the cards.

Some matches might have to be played mid week as letting the programme run into December could see some matches affected by rain.

Castle Lager Premiership clubs are left with 11 matches to play in the championship which has now been split into a race between log leaders Highlanders and the chasing pack of Dynamos, Monomotapa and Chicken Inn and the bottom seven clubs.

Of the 14 weekends, two fall away because they will be used by the Warriors for the Angola Africa Cup of Nations final qualifier on 9 September and 13 October.

The Twine Phiri-led PSL management is then left with 12 weeks for 11 league matches, a possible three weekends for a top eight tournament and four more rounds for teams that meet in the final of the confirmed Mbada Diamonds Cup.

In all between now and 1 December the PSL would have hoped to have 18 possible weekend dates for matches.
Mid week games look to be a certainty.

With Mbada Cup already confirmed, taking on board another tournament would leave PSL in a mess with their fixtures.
Clubs are not keen on Wednesday matches as they attract poor crowds nor are sponsors pleased with that.

To compound the PSL’s woes December has another extra weekend before Christmas with the Unity Day Holiday often left for national soccer activities.

This could see the programme spill over into 2012.

When contacted for comment last night the PSL president Phiri promised to comment after consulting his colleagues on the programme.

He could not commit himself to the identity of sponsors of the possible second tournament which he described as work in progress.
