MOST of the top athletes in local long distance running competitions are expected to rub shoulders in next Saturday’s potentially exciting Commissioner General of the Police 21km Road Race to be held at Dangamvura Complex in Mutare.

For the first time in its decade long history, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner General’s Half Marathon will be held in the eastern border city of Mutare.

Harare hosted nine editions of the Commissioner General of Police 21km road and the 10th edition was held in Bulawayo.

In telephone interview, ZRP Superintendent in charge of sports, Abel Chimukoko confirmed that top local athletes such as Isaac Mpofu, Ngonidzashe Ncube and Munyaradzi Jari will be partaking in this year’s edition of the annual event.

Chimukoko said apart from the 21km main event, the athletics competition will also have other categories.

“Preparations are progressing very well for the 2022 edition of The Commissioner General of Police 21km Road Race to be held at Dangamvura Old Mutual Complex in Mutare next Saturday. We will start at 6.30am. The main event will be 21km race, but we will also have other fun runs which include the 10km race for the Under-20s and the 5km race for the senior police officers.

“So far big clubs like Black Rhinos and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services as well as other renowned clubs have confirmed their participation. Of interest, we have top runners who include Isaac Mpofu, Ngonidzashe Ncube and Munyaradzi Jari who have also confirmed their participation. These guys are at their peak. They are coming into this race as they prepare for the SARPCO Games to be held in September,” Chimukoko said.

He said stiff competition is also expected in the ladies’ category.

“In the ladies’ category, we have Olivia Chitate and Ethel Pangiso who are doing very well,” said Chimukoko.
He said online registration of athletes is underway.

“This time we are using the online registration courtesy of Old Mutual our sponsors and it is progressing very well. We are expecting to attract a good number of athletes. If we could get more than 1 000 athletes, it will good for us,” he said.

Meanwhile, preparations for the annual Tanganda Half Marathon are also underway.
