DELTA Force Promotions have confirmed plans to bring Elvis “The Bomber’’ Moyo back to the boxing ring in Harare on November 21.
Moyo told Zimpapers Sports Hub last week that he was preparing for a Harare bout in November as a warm-up for his return to the mixed martial arts cage in December. The heavyweight lost his Extreme Fighting Championship title to Matunga Djikasa of the Democratic Republic of Congo a fortnight ago.
He surrendered the belt after being found 800 grammes over the 120.2kg limit on the day of the fight, turning the clash into a non-title contest. Djikasa won by technical knockout and walked away as the new champion.
Delta Force Promotions director Clyde Musonda yesterday confirmed that Moyo is on their card.
“Yeah, it could be a non-title fight over eight rounds. As of now, we are still working on the venue and other logistics.
We are keen to have him fight here; it would be good for the profile of local boxing to have a boxer of his stature serenading one of our events before the end of the year.
“We are at a stage where we are consulting everyone, including the board, sponsors, other boxers, and other stakeholders,” Musonda said from Harare.
He stressed that Harare will host what promises to be a fierce night of action.
Speaking from his Edenvale Gym base in Johannesburg, Moyo confirmed he is set for the Harare fight.
“My handlers in Harare have indicated to me that I should stay in shape. I am due to fight in a heavyweight contest on November 21. There is no resting, I am working to be in shape by that date,” he said.
Moyo began his career in Bulawayo as a sparring partner for former heavyweight champion Thamsanqa Dube under coach Phillip Striker. Both later claimed African heavyweight crowns, Dube under the World Boxing Association and Moyo with the World Boxing Organisation.
A shortage of challengers and his own adventurous streak pushed Moyo into mixed martial arts, where his strength and boxing skills served him well. After a long break, he captured the Extreme Fight Championship 127 title in April, beating South Africa’s Anthony Morel.
From 17 professional fights, Moyo has 10 wins and remains determined to bring more glory home. “I am still ready to retain pride for my country and I am looking forward to winning my next assignments,” he said.
