A LAST minute goal, deep in injury time, by Nichrut centre back, David Boriwondo sealed victory for the Shurugwi-based side against Shabanie FC in a Midlands derby played at Ascot Stadium in Gweru yesterday.
With the match headed for a share of the spoils, Boriwondo headed in a cross from Carlos Rusere which had been flicked on by Roderick Mutuma.
Rusere, who was playing his first game after switching from Shabanie, was the game changer, swinging the match into Nichrut’s favour after coming in for Farai Vimisayi midway through the second half.
The laboured victory pushed Nichrut to 19 points, four ahead of the Zvishavane side who are second from the bottom.
Nichrut coach John Nyikadzino who had predicted a tough battle before the encounter was impressed with the character shown by his players.
“Overall I am impressed by the performance of the boys, they fought very hard to secure a win. It was a very tough match but we managed to collect maximum points,” he said.
He singled out former Shabanie player Rusere saying he brought the much needed experience to the team.
“Remember we were always looking for experienced players to join the team and that is working in our favour. He changed the face of the game the moment he got in,” he said.
Shabanie coach Alexio Sigioni applauded his charges for displaying a splendid performance although they lost.
“It was quite a good match and my team played very well, considering that it was a derby. The best team won and it’s unfortunate that we lost, but that’s part of football,” he said.
