Highlanders Football Clubas own brand of energy drink has passed standard tests and will hit the market soon.

The club submitted samples to Standards Association of Zimbabwe a couple of months ago.

a?We sent somebody to the standards bureau in Harare and I can confirm that our energy drink has passed standards tests.A We now have to give the manufacturers, who remain anonymous, the go-ahead and avail the energy drink to the market. We are expecting to get a first consignment of the drink by the end of this month,a? said Bosso chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede.

The hope is that Bosso will make money out of it.

a?We think this is a project that will help us raise some funds. The energy drink is coming to compete in the market and we hope it will do well. We have been previously accused of failing to maximise on our brand and we believe this is one of the efforts we are making to earn from the clubas huge brand. I think it will be a worthwhile venture that will see us adding on to our income,a? added Gumede.

Bosso would be following in the footsteps of South African Premiership side Orlando Pirates who have their own brand of an energy drink.

The Bulawayo football club were initially reported to have approached South African firm Prime Marketing that makes the Orlando Pirates drink

The development follows on the pledge made by club vice-chairman Modern Ngwenya who revealed early this year they (Highlanders) were tapping into branded merchandise in order to shore up revenues and that the club would engage various entrepreneurs selling Bosso merchandise to ensure a percentage of the profits went into the club coffers.

Highlanders have in the past failed to turn the popularity of its brand into money as no official merchandise has been unveiled over the past years with only replicas coming on sale following the signing of a kit sponsorship deal with Adidas in 2013.

The gap saw enterprising businesspeople producing branded items with the club not getting a single cent from the sales.

Meanwhile, Highlanders followers based in Gwanda have become the latest chapter to formalise their operations.

Ronnie Sibanda was recently voted to assume the chapteras chairman position. Last Saturday, the chapter was set to host Bosso players for a breakfast as the team travelled to Beitbridge for their Premier Soccer League encounter against Border Strikers.
