Breaking free: Women in Bulawayo unite to support each other

WOMEN from Bulawayo have united and started engagements aimed at breaking the silence and building connections.

Pauline Mpofu

The event, which was launched last weekend, was hosted by Sis Are You Ok? founder Nokuthula Sibanda and had speakers that included award-winning content creator Alleta Nyathi, Cake Fairy and Fairy cafe owner Chef Kay and Amakhosikazi business forum founder Pauline Mpofu.

Alleta Nyathi

Sibanda said the vision at Sis Are you Ok? is to create a global community where women feel seen, heard and valued.
“We envision a world where women can break free from the silence and shame that hold them back and instead, rise up to empower and support one another.
“Our vision is to provide a safe space for women to share their stories and struggles, foster meaningful connections and relationships among women, promote emotional healing, growth, and empowerment and celebrate women’s strengths, resilience, and diversity. Together, we can build a movement that inspires women to rise above adversity and to become the best versions of themselves,” said Sibanda.

Nyathi said people should desist from being pressurised by the next person’s success.
“A lot of times, women become jealous of each other when they see each other excelling at different levels. Build your own life at God’s pace and don’t be intimidated by another person’s success because you never know the struggles the next person faces behind the success they have.
“Never let marriage be the ultimate standard for you. Be empowered as an individual and let marriage be a blessing that compliments your individuality. Above all, don’t let your focus shake or waver,” she said.
Said Mpofu:
“There is power in manifestation and declaration, how every day should be set aside towards the declaration of what one wants. Emphasis should be made on Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time based (S.M.A.R.T) goals”.

Chef Kay, who left a corporate job to start her baking calling after being inspired by her child’s birthday, said there is power in letting go.
“The balance between my insurance job and my baking career was becoming irregular hence why l resigned and pursued my baking calling. This is how l built my baking empire.
“There is power in letting go. Sometimes women hold on to toxic relationships because of the fear of what people will say upon hearing of the demise of the relationship or marriage but it is important to consider that your well-being comes first and so choose to pursue peace even if it means letting go.

Trauma is a real thing but it is not worth it to live in trauma while your whole life crumbles.
“Choose to walk away from all toxic situations and liberate yourself so you can live your life to the fullest.

This is how you break toxic cycles of pain, even in your children’s lives,” said Chef Kay.
