HIGHLANDERS Football Club have appointed former national team captain Benjani Mwaruwari as their substantive head coach, it has been confirmed.

Although the Bulawayo giants are yet to make a formal public announcement, confirmation of Mwaruwari’s appointment is contained in a letter written by the club’s chief executive officer, Mr Denzel Mnkandla, thanking club benefactor Wicknell Chivayo for his support.

In the letter, a copy of which Check Point is in possession of, Mnkandla confirms that the club has reached an agreement with the former Manchester City forward, popularly known as The Undertaker.

“Highlanders Football Club would like to sincerely thank you for all the financial and directional assistance to the club that you rendered this past season, 2025. The club acknowledges the splendid recommendation you made for the club to engage Mr Benjani Mwaruwari in a capacity to strengthen the club, given his technical experience in the game,” wrote Mnkandla.

He said the club had been in negotiations with Mwaruwari on how best he could assist the institution “we love so much” to improve both on and off the field.

“Consequently, the club and Mr Mwaruwari have come to an agreement that will see him take up the role of head coach. We believe his expertise will help steer the club in the right direction in terms of performance and excellence,” said Mnkandla.

The Bosso chief executive added that the appointment aligns with the vision of the club’s sponsor, noting that Mwaruwari is expected to play a key role in playing strategy, youth development and player development pathways.

He further expressed confidence that the club’s benefactor would continue to support both Mwaruwari and the team as Highlanders look ahead to the new season.

“We are pleased to see where this agreement takes the club as we look to be guided by Mr Mwaruwari. Bosso is humbled by the love that Mr Chivayo has shown through his support and his forward-thinking approach in what is best for the club,” he said.

Mnkandla also thanked Chivayo for his patience during what he described as lengthy negotiations and extended appreciation to the club’s curator, Mr Jabulani Nkomo, for his role in the process.

“We would also like to appreciate our curator, Mr J. Nkomo, who has been extremely helpful throughout this process and from the very start. We greatly value his input and wisdom in helping us steer the club in a positive direction,” he said.
