THE wait is over. Zifa has finally named Romanian tactician Marian “Mario” Marinica as the new Warriors head coach, ending weeks of speculation over who would take charge of the beleaguered national team.
The UEFA Pro Licensed coach, who boasts more than 25 years of experience across Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America, has signed a one-year deal and is expected to hit the ground running ahead of the upcoming friendlies against Algeria and Qatar.
Marinica, who previously guided Malawi to their best-ever AFCON finish in 2022 and helped Liberia shoot up the FIFA rankings in 2024, brings what Zifa calls a “blend of technical expertise and strategic leadership.”
Announcing the appointment, Zifa President Nqobile Magwizi said the association was confident the 69-year-old was the right man to lead the Warriors into a new era.
“We are delighted to welcome Coach Marinica to Zimbabwe,” said Magwizi. “His wealth of experience, modern football philosophy, and proven results at international level make him the ideal candidate to lead the Warriors into a new era.”
Magwizi said the appointment signals Zifa’s renewed commitment to building a “competitive and sustainable football structure” capable of delivering consistent results.
Marinica, who has worked with football giants such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter Milan, AS Monaco, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur, is no stranger to African football.
During his Malawi stint, the Romanian was hailed for his “fast and very fast football” approach, which saw the Flames play with grit and discipline despite limited resources.
Zifa insiders say Marinica impressed during the interviews with his focus on empowering local coaches and integrating diaspora talent, two key pillars of Zifa’s long-term development plan.
The Warriors’ new mentor will immediately take charge of the training camp ahead of the Algeria clash, marking the start of what many hope will be a fresh chapter for Zimbabwean football.
With his trademark tactical precision and eye for detail, Marinica is expected to steady the ship after the Michael Nees era, which ended in heartbreak during the World Cup qualifiers.
If Marinica’s past achievements are anything to go by, Zimbabwe’s road back to continental respect may just have found its navigator.
