A 42-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo man escaped a custodial sentence after being convicted of stealing a pair of safety shoes worth US$38 from a local shop.
Peter Ncube of North End suburb was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, after he pleaded guilty to theft before Bulawayo magistrate, Ms Patience Madondo.
The suspension is on condition that Ncube does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
Prosecuting, Ms Rumbidzai Gwishiri told the court that on January 21 at around 3.20PM, Ncube went to
Farm and City shop along Fife Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, pretending to be a customer.
“The accused stole a pair of safety shoes and concealed them on his back under a jacket before attempting to leave the shop,” said Ms Gwishiri.
The court heard that as Ncube was walking out, one of the shoes fell to the ground at the exit, raising suspicion.
Security guards searched him and recovered the remaining shoe concealed under his jacket.
Ncube was apprehended and handed over to the police, leading to his arrest.
