A 42-year-old Bulawayo man has been fined US$150 for assaulting a fellow beer drinker with a wooden bench following a misunderstanding at a local shebeen.

Mzamo Mabhena of Emthunzini suburb was convicted of assault by Western Commonage Magistrate Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube after pleading guilty to the charge.

He was sentenced to pay a fine of US$150 or, in default, serve three months in prison. The fine is payable before June 24.

Prosecutor, Mr Tafara Dzimbanhete told the court that the accused and the complainant, Allan Mpofu (49), are neighbours.

He said on June 4, 2026, at around 1pm, the two were drinking beer at a local shebeen when Mabhena accused Mpofu of disrespecting him.

The court heard that a misunderstanding arose, prompting Mabhena to pick up a wooden bench and strike Mpofu twice on the back, around the spine.

Mpofu sustained internal pain to his back but did not seek medical attention.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Mabhena’s arrest, Mr Dzimbanhete said.
