A MAN from Killarney Squatter Camp in Bulawayo has been nabbed for the theft of critical infrastructure copper cables.

On Monday police raided Killarney Squatter Camp and spotted an unusual fire in a bushy area on the edges of the settlement.

Three accused persons were observed burning copper cables and Clifford Sibanda (35) was apprehended.

His two accomplices Nqobizitha Mathe and Mlungisi Sibanda escaped and are still at large.
Further investigations resulted in the recovery of more copper cables, weighing slightly more than 157 kilogrammes, valued at US$ 3,150, under Sibanda’s bed.

Bulawayo Province has of late, been experiencing an upsurge in the vandalism of ZETDC (Zimbabwe Electricity and Transimission Distribution Company) and TelOne infrastructure.

“To the individuals who vandalise ZEDTC or TelOne cables, those who are contemplating to do so and those buyers of the commodities should seriously consider trying other legal business avenues, as the long arm of the law is now hovering over their heads.

“We also appeal to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the outstanding accused persons to come forward and report at any nearest police station,” said Bulawayo provincial deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu.
