FORMER Bulawayo Table Tennis Association (BTTA) technical director Prosper Jaya has donated two floating shields for teams that will win the league this year.
Last year’s winners of the regional gong ZRP Bulawayo and ZRP Fairbridge received glass shields sponsored by the former table tennis director, who is now based in South Africa.
BTTA Chairman Luba Ndlovu said he was pleased with the support and commitment demonstrated by Jaya.
“We appreciate and thank the support from our former BTTA Technical director. This shows his commitment to the growth and improvement of the sporting code, including the association as he pledged to continue working closely with us,” said Ndlovu.
The Bulawayo table tennis league has been facing challenges in acquiring equipment such as tables, balls and rackets.
“Attaining equipment as tables and balls has been the main challenge that the league has been facing which has been hindering the growth of the discipline at junior level,” he said.
Ndlovu said the club is seeking sponsorship for equipment needed to encourage more players to join the sporting code.
“We are appealing to the corporate world to fund us in tools needed to train and establish centers for new players to practice the sport. The BTTA is working to establish table tennis tournaments with National Association of Primary Heads, National Association of Secondary Heads all the way up to Zimbabwe Institutions of Tertiary Sports Union to promote participation in the discipline from grassroots level,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ashley Dhlamini and Princess Ncube from Bulawayo have been selected in the Zimbabwe women’s team to partake in the AUSC Region 5 games scheduled for Botswana this month. -@J_sihwa
