First built in 1959, the Mini is the car that gave us front-wheel drive as we know it by mating it to a transverse-mounted engine, and providing the basis for most family cars we see today.
2. 1997 – Toyota Prius
The first mass-produced hybrid car, it has pretty much become a byword for this type of motor. Now almost every major manufacturer has a hybrid in its range and can look to the Prius as the originator.

The motor that made electric cars a realistic and desirable proposition. There is quite a number of electric cars about, but most suffer from severely limited range and look a bit odd. Not so the Tesla Model S, which is gorgeous to behold, fast, practical, and has a thoroughly usable range.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle
The world’s first production-model hydrogen-powered car. Hydrogen is seen by many to be the future of sustainable motoring.
Passing the gas through a fuel cell creates energy much more efficiently than the chemicals used in petrol, and only clean and recyclable by-products are emitted through driving.
The Toyota Mirai is on the same page technology-wise.
