Illustrious author and poet Chiremba Hwesa Masango is set to hold a live DVD recording of readings from his popular book “Mitupo Yedzimbahwe” at Budiriro’s Status Bar tomorrow. The event is tipped to exhibit a rich cultural display with the orgainsers saying they were striving to promote cultural tourism and restoration.
“The show is a recording of poems of Zimbabwe’s totems and the inspiration came from realising the success of the book. It is supposed to educate people, especially the young generation about their totems.
While quite a number know their totems, only a few are able to recite them,” said one of the producers Fidelis Matiure.
The show will have a cultural set up with poet Chiremba Hwesa Masango making use of traditional instruments such as the mbira, ngoma and hosho.
The band will be dressed in traditional regalia and the invited guests will be treated to a top notch performance according to Matiure.
“We have invited different embassies and we are looking forward to make it a cultural exchange platform.
The initiative marks the start of more partnerships with other cultural festivals organisers in a bid to promote cultural tourism,” he said.
While live DVD recordings have been done mostly by gospel musicians locally, Matiure is confident they will take the concept to another level through the recording.
“We had limited funds to shoot our videos but one of our sponsors from Status Bar came up with the unique concept of shooting live at his joint,” he said.
Chiremba Hwesa Masango’s 67-page book has animal illustrations which traditionally identify an individual’s totem.
In Zimbabwe, the custom of totem touting is important especially at traditional gatherings, ceremonies and funerals.
In some circumstances, it is done to express appreciation or respect.
