A high-powered International Chess Federation delegation, which is being led by Dana Reizniece, the organisation’s deputy chairperson, jetted into the country today for a two-day official visit.
The delegation held discussions with Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerai Moyo.
A former Minister of Economics and Finance for the Republic of Latvia, Reizniece was accompanied by Anzel Laubscher, a senior International Chess Federation lead instructor.
“As the ICF, we are running a programme that seeks to use chess as an educational and social tool. We are in Zimbabwe to spread chess to rural schools so that no child is left behind,” she said.
She also used the opportunity to officially invite the Minister Moyo to the 2026 World Chess Olympiad which will be held in Uzbekistan in September.
Minister Moyo thanked the delegation, adding that their programmes align with the Second Republic’s mantra of ‘leaving noone and no place behind’.
“We are going to benefit a lot from this programme. We offer chess in schools and I am happy to say that your programme resonates with the Government’s policy of incorporating every Zimbabwean in issues to do with development,” he said.
After meeting the minister, the delegation proceeded to St Johns Primary School in Retreat, Waterfalls, where it taught the pupils basic chess as part of the Zimbabwe Chess Federation’s “Chess Kumusha” and Sports Tourism programmes.
