Chief loses solar panels to thieves

The men reportedly stole the panels at about 2am two weeks ago and ran towards Sengwa River. Villagers gave chase but failed to apprehend the suspects.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the incident yesterday and said investigations were in progress.

“We received a report from Mr Nobert Mkondla (25) who works for the chief. He retired to bed on a Saturday and left everything intact. He was however, awakened by unusual sounds from outside his bedroom hut at around 1am.

“Mr Mkondla woke up and saw four men carrying solar panels coming northwards from the chief’s homestead and told his mother who alerted other villagers,” said Asst Insp Makonese.

She said Mr Mkondla and his mother shouted for help thereby alerting other villagers who then gave chase forcing the thieves to abandon their loot.

Asst Insp Makonese said no arrests had been made but all the panels were recovered.

She appealed to people who might have information to assist police in their investigations.
