After scooping the coveted Nama award in the stand-up comedy category, city comedian Clive Chigubhu did not submit nomination papers for this yearas ceremony.
Chigubhu won his first Nama at last yearas ceremony, with fans saying it was just acknowledgment for his stellar work over the last few years.
After his triumph however, Chigubhu did not submit his nomination papers for this yearas ceremony, choosing instead to let other comics to stay in the running for the big prize.
Doc Vikela, Comrade Fatso and Michael Kudakwashe are the comics in contention this year.
a?As you know the Namas donat go around shows, scouting and judging the best performers. You have to submit your papers and this year I chose to stay out of the race,a? he said.
While Bulawayo stand-up comedians have always dominated the Namas, this year was different with no Bulawayo-based comic in contention for the big prize.
Chigubhu says this was not indicative of a decline in the quality produced by the cityas funnymen, as he believes that 2015 was a good year despite the repetitive content of some of the cityas stand-up comedy exponents.
a?Generally last year was good for us but we have to acknowledge that the pool is still quite small so some of the young boys that fill in for us tend to repeat their jokes.a?
With that being the case it means holding monthly shows might not be a great idea and so instead the likes of me and Ntando have to do more one-man shows. We had built an audience but we are losing it,a? he said.
